Hello!

Welcome to my blog. I am on a mission to create a community of LAZY PARENTS who know they don't have to do it all to raise independent, confident and happy kids ready to take on the world.

Lazy Parenting Hack - WATCH FROM A DISTANCE

Lazy Parenting Hack - WATCH FROM A DISTANCE

I was watching my son at a volleyball tournament and had one foot in the side door of the gym and one eye on him, while I had one foot outside the door and on my daughter climbing the big tree in the courtyard. And I mean a BIG tree, like 30-40’ tall.

My youngest LOVES to climb and she often pushes limits within herself with what some parents might call “dangerous” play. I watched, from a distance, as she climbed up and up and got to a point where I became “a little” uncomfortable. But here’s the thing, she wasn’t. At all. She was having a blast and was way happier out in the tree than she would have been in the gym trying to sit still.

The ones who WERE uncomfortable with her “risky play” were the other parents in closer proximity to her. I had to, on more than one occasion, call out “Yup! I’m here and she’s ok!” I got more than a few questionable looks and sideways glances.

The thing is, she’s been doing things like this since she was small. As the fourth, I am sure she has had way more risk in her life than my 1st born. And because of these opportunities and experiences, she has a confidence and positive self-image that I covet. She truly does believe she can do anything and proves it to all of us daily. I firmly believe this confidence comes from her pushing herself to do things and then either failing, getting back up and trying again or savouring her sweet success.

My hack today is to sit back and watch from a distance, don’t jump up and in right away when something goes wrong. See if they can handle the situation by them self first. Being a lazy parent doesn’t mean NOT watching but it does mean, starting at a young age, give them opportunities to stretch and grow and learn by themselves once in awhile. Let them feel the pride and accomplishment when they have a bit of independence and accomplish small feats on their own. Those smiles are priceless.

xoxo
